Ranipur Sanctuary: Introduction

The sanctuary got its name from the Ranipur town, where the sanctuary is located. The Ranipur Sanctuary also has a shallow lagoon stretching for about 60 km along the coast and it spreads over a total area of 500-sq-km. Brackish water lagoon of the sanctuary makes it popular in India and attracts large numbers of migratory water birds. The collection of bird here is comparable the great Eastern Himalayan valleys. It has one of the richest collections of flora and fauna. It is one of the reservoirs nature’s endangered species.
Wildlife in the Ranipur Sanctuary
The Ranipur Sanctuary is the breeding ground for numerous rare and endangered bird species. This sanctuary also provides habitats to Flamingo and other birds species like Pelicans, Painted Storks, Spot Billed Ducks, Grey Herons, Shovellers, Cormorants, White Ibis, Reef Herons, Spoon Bills, Egrets, Pipers, Open Billed Storks, Pintails, Sand Gills, and River Tern etc.
Ranipur Sanctuary is also the home to numerous invertebrates like Prawn, Plankton and Mollusks and fishes of about 65 different species like Sable Fish, Black and Silver Promphets etc. Moreover, tropical dry evergreen forest with species like Manilkara Hexandra, Auicenia Officinales, Strychnos Muxvomica, Ficus Tiela, Sargin Fish, Dryopteris Sepiata, Pteriospermus, Glaucum Uberifolium, Albizzia Amara,
and mangrove forest with species like Ezcocaria, Agollocha White, Acanthies Ilicifolius, Rhizophora Apiculata, Xylocarpus Moluecenix, Degiceros Conrniculatum are some of the popular plant species found in the santuary.
