Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary: Introduction
The Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Medak and Nizamabad district of Andhra Pradesh, India. The Wildlife Sanctuary got its name from the Pocharam Lake, on the shore of which it is located. The sanctuary spreads over 130-sq-km of area and was established in the year 1952 by the Nizam of Hyderabad for the hunting pleasure, however the bio-diversity in the region prompted the erstwhile government of Hyderabad to declare it a sanctuary to conserve its wild lives.
Wild life in the Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary
Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary is the homeland to many characteristic animals and plant species including Panther, Sloth Bear, Wild Boar, Cheetal, Sambar, Nilgai, Chowsingha, Chinkara, Hyena and Jackal, Painted Storks, herons, Coots, Teals, Cormorants, Pochards, Black and White Ibises, Spoon Bills and Open Billed Storks, and others. The deep forests of the Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary has green vegetation like Babul prosopis, Pistia, Hydrilla, Eichornia and Vallisneria. As the habitat of the sanctuary is southern tropical mixed dry deciduous with predominantly, it provides living ground for large flocks of migratory birds like Bar-headed goose, Brahminy ducks, Painted storks etc.

Climate : The climate of the Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary region is usually hot round the year. Most of the precipitation in the region occurs during summer. Maximum temperatures during the long dry season in summer soars upto a stifling 44° Celsius while winters in the Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary are usually mild.
Best time to visit : October to May is considered the best time to visit the Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary.

By Road : A number of buses and private transport to the Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary are available from Macherla, which is the nearby town from where regular bus and jeep services are available to reach the sanctuary.
By Rail : The nearest railway stations is Hyderabad which is 150 kms away from the sanctuary.
By Air : Hyderabad is the nearest airport.
