Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary – Introduction
Spread across an area of 777 square kilometers, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one the largest of its kind I the world. It has one of the richest collections of flora and fauna. The Periyar sanctuary is known for its tiger reserve. Moreover, its elephant assets are also envied by all. The most prolific feature of Periyar wildlife sanctuary is the Periyar Lake spreading across an area of 26 square kilometers. The most exciting part of a visit to the Periyar wildlife sanctuary is a boat cruise on the lake. It is really a lifetime experience to see the elephants taking bath from the lake.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is also blessed with a large collection of herbs, shrubs, trees and climbers. The trees in this region are characterized by evergreen and semi-evergreen rain forests, all kinds all ferns and other trees.

However, during the months of March to April, the temperature rises to about 39°C. The rainy season prevails during the months of June to August. This locality receives an annual rain fall of about 3340 mm on the average.
