The Peppara wildlife sanctuary is a picture perfect place located on the catchments of the Peppara dam which is constructed across the Karamana River. Formerly a part of Paruthippally Mountain ranges of Thiruvananthapuram Division, the area was declared as sanctuary in 1983 taking into account its ecological significance.
Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary – Introduction
The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across an area of 56 square kilometers. It has one of the richest collections of flora and fauna. The Peppara sanctuary is characterized by tropical evergreen forests of Southern hilltop, semi-evergreen forets of the West coast, and mixed deciduous forest of the southern ranges. The Peppara wildlife sanctuary is home to 13 tribal settlements, among which eleven are in Athirumala section and the rest two are in Thodayar section.

The Peppara wildlife sanctuary has a great variety of flora and fauna. In fact, there are only a few wildlife sanctuaries in India that has the variety like that of Peppara wildlife sanctuary. The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is also blessed with kraits, bison, barking deer, spotted deer, vipers, darters, little cormorants, and black eagles. The other major species include leopards, sambar deer, tiger, wild dogs, turtles, bison, bonnet macaques, and elephants.
The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is also blessed with a large collection of herbs, shrubs, trees and climbers. The trees in this region are characterized by tropical evergreen forests of Southern hilltop, semi-evergreen forets of the West coast, and mixed deciduous forest of the southern ranges.

However, during the months of March to April, the temperature rises to about 39°C. The rainy season prevails during the months of June to August. This locality receives an annual rain fall of about 3340 mm on the average.
