Manjira Bird Santuary: Introduction
The popular Manjira Bird Sanctuary is situated nearby Sangareddy, in Medak district of Andhra Pradesh, India. This bird sanctuary was established in1978 to preserve the ecosystem of the region. The Manjira Bird Sanctuary spreads over a vast area of 3568-sq-kms, which is merely 50 kms away from Hyderabad. The sanctuary got its name from the river Manjira along which it is located and hence it supports riverine habitat. The Manjira wild life sanctuary comprises of nine small islands which provides habitats to a number of resident and migratory birds in addition to marsh crocodiles and muggers. The place has boating arrangements to take visitors around the sanctuary for bird watching.

Marsh land and riverine habitat of the Manjira Bird Santuary supports living for many water bird species, mugger crocodiles and other fresh water lives. Common biotic communities in the Manjira Bird Santuary include bird species like Painted Storks, Herons, Coots, Teals, Cormorants, Pochards, Black and White Ibises, Spoon Bills, Open Billed Storks etc.; reptiles like Monitor Lizards, Fresh Water Turtles, Cobra and Marsh Crocodiles; fish species like Catla, Rahu, Murrel, Ech Paten, Karugu, and Chidwa; and other invertebrates such as Prawns, Mollusis and Zoo plankton. The islands and the river banks in the Manjira Bird Santuary holds several plant species like Babul Prosopis and other plants commonly found in water including Pistia, Hydrilla, Eichornia and Vallisneria. This make the sanctuary an excellent nesting spots for birds.
