Hemis High Altitude National Park

Hemis High Altitude National Park, Jammu and Kashmir  Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), the most northern state of India is known world wide for many reasons. The state has a vast resource of natural and wildlife resource. J&K has some of the best national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and bird sanctuaries. The natural environment of the state has become a perfect place for many wild and endangered species of plants and animals. Many people from different parts of the world come to visit these parks, wildlife sanctuaries and bird sanctuaries every year. Hemis High Altitude National Park is one among many parks and sanctuaries located in the state. The park is home for many species of rare and extinct species.

Hemis High Altitude National Park – Introduction
Located in Ladakh, Hemis High Altitude National Park attracts many tourist and lovers of nature each year. Spread over an area of 3350 sq. kms, the place is home to many rare and endangered plant and animal species. The National Park encompasses the Markha and Rumbak Valleys. The Zanskar River runs along the hills. All these natural placements make the place an ideal location for several plants and animals. Hemis High Altitude National Park is home to snow leopards, one of the most rare and endangered species in the world. Apart from this, one can also find various wild mammals, birds and plant varieties in the park.

Some of the other endangered animals are Bharals (Blue Sheep), Ibex, mountain goats with long horns, the small Ladakh Urial (sheep) with wrinkled horns and Tibetan Argali.One can also find rodents, such as mice and voles and tailless mouse-hares. One can also find animals such as Himalayan Mouse-hare, long tailed Marmot, Pallas's Cat and Wild Dogs. There are more than 200 species of birds such as Common Kestrel, Golden Eagle, Himalayan Griffon and Lammergeier Little Owl found in the park and surrounding regions.

Climate -Climate in the Hemis High Altitude National Park is extremes with great variations and changes observed. During the winters, the temperature goes down up to -20º C.

Best time to visit -Best time to visit is between June and October.

Getting there -

By Air : The nearest airport is Leh, which is well connected by Indian Airlines from Delhi, Chandigarh, Srinagar, and Jammu.
By Rail: The nearest railhead is Jammu, located at a distance of around 690 km away
By Road:The Leh-Srinagar National Highway is officially open from May 15 to November 15 every year. The Nearest town is Ladakh.
