Dachigam National Park

The state of Jammu & Kashmir is sanctified with infinite natural panorama and faunal residents. Dachigam National Park is located in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. It is one of the India’s most beautiful wildlife reserves and it spreads over 141 sq. km. There are ten villages adjacent to the circumference of the Dachigam National Park. So, this national park got its name Dachi-gam, which means ‘Ten Villages’. This national park stands to a height of about 14,000 feet above the sea level.

Dachigam National Park– Introduction
Dachigam National Park in Jammu and Kashmir Dachigam National Park was declared as a National Park in 1951. It is a habitat to some of the unique Himalayan range of flora and fauna. It is located to a distance of 22 km from Srinagar. In fact, the park has two sectors-namely the Upper Dachigam and the Lower Dachigam and the altitudes of the park vary between 1700 and 4300 meters.

Wildlife in Dachigam National Park:
The suitable climate and excellent ecosystem of the park provides the best habitat to many species of flora and fauna. It is a home to endangered hangul, the only left species of red deer to be found in India. Apart from this, the other inhabitants of the park consist of Himalayan black bear, wild goat, Kashmir stag, leopards, jackals, long-tailed marmots, jungle cats, etc. It is also a home to many species of exotic Himalayan birds that include pygmym, woodpeckers, owlets, grosbeaks, red-billed blue magpies choughs, orange bullfinch to name only a few.

Climate –
The climate here in Dachigam National Park remains very pleasant, thus making it a favorable spot to hold many exotic species of flora and fauna.

Best time to visit -
The best time to visit the Upper Dachigam is between the months of May to June. And the month of September to December is the best time to visit the other section of the national park, i.e. the Lower Dachigam.

Getting there -

By Air -
The nearest airport to Dachigam National Park is at Srinagar, which is located at a distance of 22 km from the National Park.

By Rail –
The nearest railway station to the park is at Jammu at a distance of 310 km.

By Road -
The excellent roadways ensure comfortable connectivity of the park to the rest places of the state as well as the country. The nearest town to the national park is just at a distance of 22 km from the national park.
