Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary: Introduction
The Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is situated amidst mangrove forests of the Godavari region in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is located 20 kms from Kakinada and 70 Kms from Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh. The place was declared a wild life sanctuary in July 1978 to conserve the mangrove vegetation of the region. This wildlife sanctuary spreads over about 235 sq.km of area. The wildlife sanctuary acquired its name from a tiny village “Coringa,” located in the East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. The beauty of the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is that it is located on the back waters of the sea.

WildLife in the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary:
The Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary provides habitats to numerous endangered and protected species of animals and plants. The dynamic mangroves ecosystem of the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary supports biodiversities such as Fishing Cats, Otters, Jackals, Estuarine Crocodiles, Sea Turtles, Sea Gulls, Pelicans, Storks, Herons, Snipes, Flamingos, to name only a few. However, the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is renowned for its Salt Water Crocodiles. Numerous species of salt tolerant plant species constitutes its flora, which include tropical and subtropical floral species such as Rhizophora, Avincinia, Sonneratia Aegiceros, and others. Over 120 species of birds are found in this wildlife sanctuary.

Climate : The climate of the region is characterized by dry, hot, and humid weather with an average rainfall of 2.5mm in a year. Maximum temperature shoots upto 47 degree celsius in summer during the period between May and early June and the minimum temperature dips down to 14 degree celsius in winter during the period between December and January.

Best time to visit : The period between October to May is considered the best time to visit the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary.

How to get there
Road : It is well connected by road from the town of Kakinada through the Kakinada-Yanam route.
Rail : The nearest railway station is Kakinada.
Water : Kakinada is also the nearest port alongside the Bay of Bengal.
