The aromatic city of Bundi has a very attention-grabbling history. It unveils the fact that it was once the capital of one of the ex- princely states of Rajasthan. The edifice of the city pulls out the attention on the architectural magnificence of its monuments that still mirrors the stateliness of the bygone local Rajput chiefs. Before we present an elaborated picture of the city, we just would like to give you an idea about it that Bundi's palaces are bejeweled with larger than life murals that reflect the brilliance of its rulers.
Bundi has been an influential city of several local tribes out of which the most prominent who ruled here were the plucky Meenas. The name Bundi is derived from Bunda Meen who happened to be the former Meena kings. But later in 12th century, the arena of Bundi was ruled over by the audacious Chauhan rulers whose descendants made Bundi their main hub of power.
The precise information about its origin can be marked out back to the Hada Rajputs. The terrain of Hadoti in which Bundi region stands has taken its name from these Hada Rajputs who were an offshoot of the heroic Chauhan kinfolk. The Hadas dominated the area of Bundi for a long time from 12th century onwards and annexed the same in 1241 along with Kota region which also came under their rule in 1264.
But over the years, the significance of Bundi has declined and in 1579, it was destitute of the area which later became the Kota state. In 1838, another separated region included all of what became Jhalawar state. Subsequent to India’s autonomy in the year 1947, Bundi became a unit of the Dominion of India, which afterwards became the Union of India.
