Introduction to Shiva Temple Alwar
If there is anything to discover except the forts and monuments in Alwar that is none other than its temples. These gigantic temples are not famous because of their religious fervor but, also considered as the best attractions for the tourists. Shiva Temple in Alwar is one of those temples which shares its nearness to well known Sariska National Park and its beauty can be experienced from the top of a hillock.

The place where Shiva Temple is built, used to have around 360 temples. But, because of the havoc created by Aurangzeb, most of them were destroyed. But, Shiva Temple was able to survive. Very few of us know, that it was built by the Pandavas. According to a famous myth, Raja Jai Singh’s army was opposed by Lord Shiva when he wanted to triumph over this land. But, later Raja Jai Singh realized and appointed some priests to offer regular prayers to Lord Shiva. The first priest appointed to look after the temple was Bhartrihari whose magical powers were the best remedy to cure the fatal diseases. But, later, he and the other priests got buried in front of the temple.

The Shiva Temple in Alwar, Rajasthan is an impressive structure. It has the pictures of all Indian deities along with the men and women adorned on the walls of the temple beautifully. Earlier, the temple was not surrounded by these huge walls. But, after the annexation of Raja Jai Singh, he constructed these walls and dedicated them to Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh or Shiva. Unfortunately, the walls of Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu were demolished but, thankfully, the great wall of Lord Shiva still stands. No exaggeration in appreciation of Shiva temple as, they have exquisite carvings and sculptures for the visitors. The exemplary craftsmanship can be seen in form of stone carvings particularly done on the 'Shikhara'.

The best time to plan your visit is at the special time of Shiv Puja during the monsoon or at the time of Mahashivratri Mela.
