Introduction to City Palace, Alwar
Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh built the beautiful City Palace in 1793 A.D. It is the repository of both Rajput and Mughals styles. The dimension the City Palace has elegant spectator area made up of marbles set on lotus flower having its roots in the central courtyard. But, today, the greater part of City Palace has been converted into the government offices. The arena of the Palace is very huge stretching its vicinity in 5 km from east to west. It seems to be standing 304 meters above the city and 595 meters above the sea level. There is a myth related to the Palace that Mughal emperor Babar spent a night at this fort and took away the hidden treasures to present to his son. ‘Salim Mahal’ is the place where Jahangir, the Mughal ruler spent a night in the fort.
Description of City Palace in Alwar
City Palace, Alwar showcases the glimpse of the lavish life style of the Maharajas of that era. Once here a cup cut out of a single piece of raw emerald was found whose value is inestimable. Later in 1775 A.D the fort was annexed by Maharaja Pratap Singh who also took away its hidden treasures. The City Palace shows off its 15 imposing towers and 51 smaller towers. There are many entry points with different names such as Laxman Pol Jai Pol, Suraj Pol, Chand Pol, Kishan Pol and Andheri Gate.
The Museum in the Palace has wonderful array of Ragamala paintings and small paintings from the Alwar, Bundi, and Mughal school. The palace also has wonderful collection of personal wealth of the Maharajas of Alwar along with the manuscripts of Shah Nama, Gulistan and on Mughal Emperor Babur's life.
