Tibetan New Year:
This is the supreme festival of Tibet. In olden times, the blossoming of the peach tree marked the starting of the New Year. Since then, the first day of the first month is noted as the arrival of the New Year. People celebrate this day with full excitement and thrill.
Monlam (Great Prayer) Festival:
This festival is one of the greatest religious celebrations in Tibet. Monks from varied monasteries in Tibet gather in Jokhang to offer prayers to Shakyamuni's images. Pilgrims from all across the place come and make donations to the monks.
Harvest Festival:
This is also one of the major festivals in Tibet. Farmers celebrate their plenteous harvest during this festival.
Butter Oil Lantern Festival:
This Tibetan festival is celebrated on the last day of the Great Prayer festival. Going back into history, this festival marks the victory of Shakyamuni and to celebrate this occasion, the Lord of Neu Dzong, a patron of Tsongkapa, lighted up many butter lamps.
Chungbacixi Festival:
This Tibetan festival is celebrated on the day when Buddha gave his first sermons.
Saga Dawa Festival (The Birth of Buddha)
This festival in Tibet is considered to be the holiest. Three remarkable occurrences happened together on this day. These were - Buddha's birth, Buddha's death & Buddhist enlightenment.
