According to Hindu mythology, two demons namely Chanda and Munda were harassing goddess Ambika. They threw their arrows at her. Then goddess kali emerged from the folds of Ambika. She fought against those demons single- handedly and finally killed Chanda and Munda. At this, Ambika got pleased at Kali and declared that she would be worshipped at this place as Chamunda.
