Description: The Thirunakara Temple, where Thirunakara festival is celebrated is dedicated to Lord Shiva. On this occasion one gets a wonderful glimpse of various programmes presented by the popular folk artists. In the premises of the temple, Mayilattom or peacock dance and Velakali are performed. On the third or fourth day Kathakali is performed by the trained artists through out the night. During this festival the premises of Thirunakara Temple is converted to a fair ground with many stalls. A large variety of industrial and agricultural goods are exhibited at this fair.
The Thirunakara Festival in Kerala concludes with the Aarattu ceremony or the holy bathing ritual of the idol of Lord Shiva housed in the Thirunakara Temple. The grand procession begins in the afternoon. The most striking feature of this splendid procession is nine beautifully decorated elephants.
Time for celebration: The Thirunakara Festival is celebrated each year in the months of March- April. This annual festival lasts for a period of ten days.
