Introduction about Pulikali Festival : Pulikali is the most colorful festival of Kerala. It is an annual event which involves the performing arts of colorful dances and is mainly staged in the Trichur and Palghat districts. The form of art is also called as Kaduvaakali.
Description: The colorful display of the folk art at the time of Onam in Kerala in the form of dance and performances are termed as Pulikali. The word Pulikali literally means 'play of tigers'. The performance revolves around the theme of tiger hunting. The performing art is also known as Kaduvaakali. It is a 200 year old art form which has been very carefully preserved by the artists of the state. The form is performed by the trained artists who stage it just to entertain the locals and the visitors. The best place to catch the glimpse of the performance is the Swaraj Ground at Thrissur on the fourth day of Onam.
The dancers in the fray are usually three or more in number and are dressed themselves in various animals and other creatures. The dancers perform to the loud sound of music, drums and other percussions like udukku, thakil and many more.
Time for celebration: The usual time for the celebration of Pulikali is the first week of September on the occasion of Onam. The artists come up with many enactments of different forms that are truly colorful.
