Introduction about Pooram in Trichur : The temple festival of Pooram is celebrated with a great opulence and earnestness in the Trichur district of Kerala. This temple festival is unparalleled as far as attracting visitors is concerned. The festival represents the country’s secular culture and people belonging to all religions participate in it.
Description: The colorful processions are the most impressive aspect of this temple festival. On this occasion, the elephants are dressed in decorative insignia. Many aesthetically built umbrellas are erected over the heads of elephants which carry the deities of the temples. These delicately adorned elephants are taken in a procession to the Vadakumanathan Temple in Trichur. The music created by combining the effect of five percussion and wind instruments popularly known as Panchavadyam, is very pleasing to the ear as well.
Several temples in the vicinity of this temple serve as the starting point of the procession. The processions that begin at the Krishna temple in Thiruvambadi and the Devi temple at Paramekkavu are two parts of Trichur. They keenly contest with each other. The aim of each of the divisions is to make their processions more grand and splendid than the other. The other prime appeal of the Trichur Pooram is the superb display of fireworks. This brilliant show continues for three to four hours at a stretch.
Time for celebration: The festival of Pooram is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Medam. It corresponds either to the month of April or May according to the Gregorian calendar.
