Introduction about Nehru Trophy Boat Race : In Kerala the presence of so many back waters helps to facilitate the water sports. The large number of boat races held each year is now becoming an integral part of the culture of the state. Nehru Trophy Boat Race on the Punnamda Lake of Alappuzha is held with such a fanfare that it can very well be compared with a festival.
Description: In the year 1952, when Prime minister of India Pt. Nehru visited Alappuzha then to honor his visit a boat race was organized in Alappuzha. Nadubhagam Chandan emerged as the winner of this boat race. After his return to Delhi a silver trophy was built following his instructions and is named after him as the Nehru trophy. Since then this boat race is being held to commemorate his visit. The occasion attracts thousands of visitors to witness this spectacular event. There is frenzied excitement in the air which is filled with cheers and applauses.
Time for celebration: Each year the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on the second Saturday of the month of August.
