Introduction about Attukal Pongala : The Attukal Bhagavathy temple celebrates Pongala Festival and that is called the Attukal Bhagavathy. It is one of the most important religious festivals of Kerala celebrated in Trivandrum in the presence of thousand of devotees.
Description: The Pongala Mahotsavam held in Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is considered a sacred ceremony. A ten-day long festival starts according to the Malayalam month of Makara-Kumbham and closes with the sacrificial offerings of Kuruthitharpanam. Observed by lakhs of women this Attukal temple turns into the Sabrimala for women. Celebrated with lot of fun and excitement the women cooked the rice with jaggery and coconut and offer it to the Goddess. The Attukal Bhagavathy Temple was built by local family years ago. According to a myth the deity of the temple was an avatar of Kannaki. During this festival, women dress in their best and offer their prayers to the deity for 9 days. The sword of Devi is carried by the head priest and he blesses the ladies by sprinkling holy water and showering flowers.
Time for celebration: The festival held annually in the month of February and March and is celebrated with great pomp and show.
