Introduction about Arattupuzha Pooram : The Arattupuzha Pooram is described as `the greatest Devamela on earth’ and it is the oldest pooram festival in Kerala. The `ezhunnellippu' or procession of the `thidambu' or idol of the Arattupuzha Sastha includes splendidly decorated elephants with traditional drummers.
Description: Aarattupuzha Pooram, is the most important festival that sees the largest elephant stage entry which includes about 70 majestically caparisoned elephants. Aarattupuzha is about 14 km from Thrissur town and the famous Ayyappa temple where the annual pooram festival is celebrated.
The final pooram is conducted with sixty one caparisoned elephants decked up with bright colored umbrellas and parasols in the traditional manner. The whole scene is an unparalleled spectacle. The temple band along with traditional music lends a majestic tenor to the extravaganza. According to a legend, the patron deities of the neighboring villages ride majestically decorated tuskers to arrive in a procession at the Arattupuzha village on this day.
Time for celebration: The festival is usually celebrated in the last week of March.
