Aanayoottu Festival

Introduction about Aanayoottu: Elephants are an integral part of South Indian Society. Elephant is a sacred animal which is justified by its obligatory presence of elephants in south India temples. The Aanayootoo festival is celebrated in the Vadakkunnathan temple in Thrisur Kerala.

Description: Vadakkunnathan temple is one of the oldest Shiva temples of South India. It has been playing a host to Aanayottoo event. It is a feast to the eyes as nearly 50 unadorned elephants are positioned and worshipped with delicious feast. It is believed that offering poojas and delicious food to elephants is a way to satisfy Lord Ganesha the God of wealth. . The special feed, of the elephants include sugar-cane leaves, coconut, jaggery and the sweet mix of Ganapthi pooja prasadam.
Time for celebration: The Aanayootto Festival is celebrated on the first day of the month of Karkkidakam according to the Malayalam calendar. This coincides with the month of July.
