Originally this was a small fishing village with practically very little or
no industrial activity of its own. Kovalam actually consists of three
successive crescent beaches - the southernmost known as the Lighthouse
beach, the Middle beach and the Third beach north of the Ashok Radission
Resort.A extensive rocky elevation on the beach has created a beautiful bay of calm waters ideal for sea bathing. The leisure options at this beach are plenty and diverse. Apart from engaging in diverse water sport activities, you can also indulge in herbal body toning massages, special cultural programmes, Catamaran cruising etc. Life on the beach begins late in the day and carries on well into the night.

The beaches are generally safe and clean. There are life guard patrols on the beach, but you still need to be careful when swimming. Besides swimming and sunbathing, the natural bay is ideal for kayaking, surfing, sailing, yatching, skiing, scuba diving and windsurfing. Snorkeling in such a wonderful tract of nature gives an unparalleled high. Surfboards and boogie boards can be hired on the Kovalam beach. Marine Angling for deep-sea fishing is also available at the beach. The speed lovers can participate in the exhilarating sport of parasailing.
