History of India
India – a country with a dynamic history, which spans back to the time when human civilization began. As you look back, you will see that the history of India begins mysteriously with mystical cultures along the Indus River and various communities who were known for farming. History of India is much more than just a set of unique developments.
History of India will tell you the story of the rich past of ancient India. History has it that India is the home to the Indus Valley civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires. You will be amazed that Indian was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Here existed the four major world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. While Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Islam and Christianity arrived in the first millennium AD and mingled into the region's diverse culture. The country became a modern nation - state in 1947 after achieving independence from British Rule.
The history of India can be divided into four major segments, the ancient era, the medieval era, the modern era and the post-independence era. It is fascinating to see that history of Indian dates back to the Stone Age with paintings at the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh. These paintings symbolize the earliest known traces of human life in India. The first known permanent settlements appeared over 9,000 years ago and gradually developed into the Indus Valley Civilization. It was followed by the Vedic Civilization, which laid the foundations of Hinduism. From around 550 BCE, many independent kingdoms and republics known as the Mahajanapadas were established across the country.
Other fascinating fact about the history of India is that it also witnesses the Maurya dynasty under Emperor Ashoka. Later to this came the Gupta dynasty, also known as ‘The Golden Age’. It is quite amazing to view at the paintings at the Ajanta Caves in Aurangabad, Maharashtra which were made in the 6th century.
However, invasions from Central Asia between the tenth and twelfth centuries came under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate, and later the Mughal dynasty. In the history of India, the Mughal emperors expanded their kingdoms to cover a large part. In the seventeenth and eighteenth century, the Mughal supremacy declined and the Maratha Empire became the dominant power. From the sixteenth century, several European countries, including Portugal, Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom, started arriving as traders and later took advantage of the fractious nature of relations between the kingdoms to establish colonies in the country.
During the first half of the twentieth century, a nationwide struggle for independence was launched by the Indian National Congress and other political organizations. The history of India witnessed the famous freedom struggler Mahatma Gandhi who displayed his commitment to ahimsa, or non-violence. Finally, on 15 August 1947, India gained independence from British rule and is a golden period in history of India.
Therefore, it is quite fascinating to see that the history of India is interlinked between the East and the West. One can say that the country has always been an invader's paradise. Thus, no history is as interesting, dynamic and thrilling than the history of India.
