A shelter to about 250 species of wetland birds, Nal Sarovar Sanctuary, Gujarat is a window to the state’s magnificent wildlife. The winter migrants of the sanctuary comprise White Storks, Rosy Pelicans, Herons, Flamingoes and Brahminy Ducks. The reserve also has a lake which is as long as 116 sq km. During the months of November and February, one can see a large number of indigenous and migratory birds flocking to Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary. If you visit the sanctuary early morning, you can also catch a glimpse of ducks, flamingos, geese and pelicans.
The islands of the lake are mainly inhabited by Bharwad shepherds. The Padhars inhabit the banks. They are excellent folk dancers, artisans and boatmen. The Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary Ahmedabad offers a horde of recreational activities. You can go for a country boat ride for bird viewing. You can also enjoy picnics at the shacks on the islands. The KP farm at Sanand inside the park offers good lunch options, has a swimming pool, children's amusement park and a host of other facilities. There is also the Goyal Water Park. You can also go for angling, boating and camping. Some animal rides are also offered at the sanctuary.
The best season for a tour to Nal Sarovar Sanctuary Gujarat is the months of November to February. Located 60 kms southwest of Ahmedabad, the Nal Sarovar is easily accessible. One can hire taxis or take the state transport buses to get to the sanctuary.
