The Uperkot Fort in Junagadh, which is amongst the most beautiful forts and monuments in Gujarat, is located in the heart of the city, on a plateau. This fort was built by the famous Mauryan ruler Chandragupta in 319 B.C. Coming here, one can see the famous edicts of King Ashoka in the form of inscriptions that can be found on a giant boulder, located barely 2 km from Uperkot Fort, Junagadh.
Visitors are allowed entry to the Uperkot Fort in Junagadh, Gujarat through a large gate. Some of the walls of the fort are as high as 20 m. To the left of the fort’s gate lies the Jama Masjid, which stands just on top of a Hindu temple. The road further leads to a rocky hill which has stone carvings with floral work. One also gets to see the Khapra Kodia Caves that lie towards the north of the fort and the Babupyana Caves to the south.
One of the most interesting parts of Junagadh Uperkot Fort is the 15 ft cannon, which was built in Egypt in the year 1531. Here, one will find two giant step wells. Here is the historical 11th century Navghan Kuva whose circular stairway leads 50 m down into the well. The Adi Chadi Vav has 170 steps.
