History of Rajkot

 
The history of Rajkot, Gujarat dates back to 1612. The city was founded by Thakur Saheb Vibhaji Ajoji Jadeja who belonged to the Jadeja clan. According to Rajkot history, Vibhaji was the grandson of Jam Sataji of Nawanagar which is now popular as Jamnagar. Rajkot was the regional headquarters in the British period.

The history of Rajkot is also linked to Mahatma Gandhi, the great Indian leader whose name is still famous as the Father of the Nation. It is said that Gandhiji spent those years of his life in the city when his father was a Diwan to one of the Nawabs of Saurashtra. The Kaba Gandhi No Delo in Rajkot is the house where he lived that has now been converted into a museum. Gandhiji went to Alfred High School in Rajkot which is now called Mahatma Gandhi High School. Also, according to the great history of Rajkot, Saleel Wagh, a renowned Marathi poet was born in the city in the year 1967.
