History of Diu

 

Diu, a tiny little island in the Arabian Sea is smoothly connected by the sea path from West Asia to India and the Far East. Diu was under control of Portuguese till 19th December 1961 and separated from Goa for becoming a full-fledged state. The history of Diu dates back to many centuries which were being ruled by diverse dynasties in different periods of history. Diu and its counterpart Daman was the base for rewarding opium deal with the east for the Portuguese.

The history regarding the ruling of place, Diu is quite unique and different in comparison with any other cities of India. Guptas, ruled Diu from 415 AD to 467 AD, the Maitrakas, ruled from 470 AD to 788 AD. From 789 AD to 941 AD, it was under the regime of the Chavda Dynasty. Afterward the Chalukyas succeeded the Chavda rulers and governed Diu. It has an affluent and vibrant past that saw the reign of many emperors, even Parsis stayed in Diu for three years, in the 7th century.

According to Hindu Mythology, Diu was the dwelling of ‘Daitya’ (Demon-king) as Jallandhar. He was beheaded by Lord Vishnu with his Sudarshan-Chakra. There exists the temple at Jallandhar having the famous ancestral relic of the Demon-king, is a major tourist attraction of Diu.

Diu, witnessed a large number of bloody battles within the rulers of various dynasties. The town of Diu is festooned with 3 churches having a rich history and significance. The Diu Fort is the construction of 1541, extended over a huge span of land in this tremendous coast. Diu offers an exiting panorama of breathtaking places, is a frequently visited spot of Daman and Diu.  Now; Diu, a perfect getaway to holiday for those longing for a quiet, peace and calm vacation as it is free from the din and bustle of everyday life.
