Goa Carnival, the vital part of Portuguese legacy of the state, which was a province of Portugal till 1961. The Portuguese took it to Goa as they also brought it to Brazil, where it is celebrated with moderate gusto. Carnival epitomizes the fun-loving traditions, which is the unique special quality of Goa. Goa Carnival Events
Street plays, songs, dances and unrehearsed farces are performed in fort of the enthusiastic and responsive audience. Drifts portraying popular lullabies and tiny rhymes make a fanciful and bright sight of the streets. Cultural functions, competitions are held in these three days of celebration of Goa Carnival. The whole program is judged by some reputed groups of people of the state. King Momo distributes prizes to the winner. All the contestants of the carnival events are dressed themselves in colorful costumes and elaborate masks. The dresses are made of sheer-transparent polythene. In this fun-filled atmosphere of Carnival people smear colors on each other whereas flour, eggs, fruits are being thrown in the earlier times. Carnival Festival of Goa has no religious hints and end with cultural highlights of the state.
