Aizawl means 'the home of the highlanders' giving clear hints that it is a place located in high altitudes. Located at an altitude of 3500 feet above the sea level, Aizawl is the capital of Mizoram, a small state in the northeastern part of the country. The exotic natural beauty of the place captivates tourists. River Tlawng flows on the east of Aizawl while Durtlang hills are to the north. The State Museum : The State Museum has an impressive collection of traditional Mizo items. They include traditional Mizo dresses, implements, historic relics and other similar items. Tourists can gather lot of information regarding Mizo history and culture by visiting the place.

Mini Zoo : The mini zoo complex of Aizawl is also a place worth visiting. There are a few rare animal species the most important of which is endangered sun bear. The zoo has been set up in a very picturesque location.

Tamdil Lake : Located at a distance of 85 kms from Aizawl, Tamdil Lake is visited by most tourist who come to Aizawl. Tamdil is also a popular picnic spot.

Some of the other attractions in and around Aizawl are the Zoological garden, Treasury Square, Vengthlang and Bethlehem.

Air : State carrier Indian Airlines operates regular flights to Aizawl from Kolkata and Guwahati.
Rail : Lumding in Assam is the nearest railhead from Aizawl.
Road : By road transport, Aizawl can be approached only through Silchar in Assam. Silchar is at a distance of 140 kms from Aizawl. Aizawl is connected to the rest of the country via Silchar by National Highway 44. Buses are available to Aizawl from Guwahati and other capitals of north eastern states.

Shopping in Aizawl
Tourists coming to Aizawl must buy the Khumbeu ceremonial bamboo hat, the most popular product of the state. The hat is made of waterproof wild Hnathial leaves. There are many other decorative items made of bamboo and cane which are among the best buys of the place. The main shopping areas of Aizawl are Bara Bazaar, New market, Ritz Market, Bazar Bungkawn and Thakthing Bazar.
