Spituk is a magnificent monastery, which is located at an approximate distance of 8 km from Leh. The Spituk Gompa was founded by Od-de, the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub Od in the 11th century. The Stok, Sankar and Saboo are the three monasteries in Ladakh that are considered to be the branches of Spituk Gompa. You can witness an image of Lord Buddha and Mahakaal inside the Spituk Gompa. This monastery also showcases a rich collection of ancient masks, antique arms, etc.
The Dukhang is the main temple of the monastery. The throne inside it was reserved for His holiness, Dalai Lama. Beside this central throne a door opens that leads to dark old chapel. Inside it, you can witness an image of Tsong-kha-pa and his two chief disciples. Spituk Gompa is the venue of Gustor Festival that is celebrated every year.
