India is proud to have a vast recourse of natural forest and wildlife. Apart from National Forests, Wildlife Sanctuaries and Forest Reserves, India also has a good number of Bird Sanctuaries. Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary present in Goa is one of them. Located in a relatively small area, the place has attracted many students, environmentalists, biologists and common visitors throughout the year.
Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary - Introduction
Named after the famous ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, the bird sanctuary is home to many of the unique and rare bird species. Every year a number of migratory birds come to the sanctuary from various parts of the globe. The place is like a safe adobe for them. One can fins various species of birds, who come to breed here. Spanning just over an area of 1.8 sq. kilometers, the bird sanctuary is located at Chorao Island on River Mandovi.
Wildlife in Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary
The flora at Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary consists of mangrove shrubbery. And various fauna found over here include; local as well as migratory birds, crocodiles, flying foxes and jackals. Apart from these, the palace is also a suitable breeding ground of a variety of fishes and other aquatic creatures.

The sanctuary can be visited any time of the year. However, the best time to visit is between October to March.

By Air-
The nearest airport is Dabolim loacted at a distance of 29 km from Panaji.
By Road-
One can also visit the place by boat by taking bus from Panaji to the Ribandar ferry wharf and there after a ferry across the Mandovi River to reach the Chorao island.
