Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary – Introduction
This Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary is situated quite close to the Vrindavan gardens in Mysore, India. This beautiful bird sanctuary is estlabished on the banks of the River Kaveri and has a group of six desert islands. The islets came into being when a dam across the Kaveri River was built in the 1700s.
Wildlife in Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary
The Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary is famous for its birds and other fauna and flora. Riverine reed beds cover the banks of the islands, while the islands themselves are covered in broadleaf forests, with dominant species being Terminalia arjun (Arjun tree), bamboo groves, and Pandanus trees. Eucalyptus and Acacia trees have also been planted, which might lead to long-term eradication of native species. The endemic and threatened lily Iphigenia mysorensis of the family Colchicaceae grows in the sanctuary.
The major attractions include the islands, which are the hubs of numerous small mammals. The prime species include the Bonnet Macaque and colonies of Flying Fox. Small mammals like Indian Gray Mongoose, Common Palm Civet and the monitor lizard are also found here.
The common resident of the riverine reed beds include the Mugger Crocodile, which is also called the Marsh Crocodile. Moreover, there are the breeding water birds like Black-headed Ibis, Woolly-necked Stork, Common Spoonbill, Indian Shag, Asian Openbill Stork, Lesser Whistling Duck, Stork-billed Kingfisher and many other common birds which include cormorants, egrets, and herons. The famous Stone Plover, and River Tern are also linked here. The Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary is the hub of a large number of Streak-throated Swallows, to name a few.
Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary - Tourist Information
Climate : The temperature in the summer reaches the maximum of 33°C mark. The winter in Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary is a bit brief. It lasts from November to January, when the minimum temperature falls down to 14°C. Monsoon is from June to September.
Best time to visit : The best time visit Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary is from October to March. The real peak season to visit is April-May.
