Pulicat Sanctuary is situated deep inside the dense forest of Andhra Pradesh and is considered to be the naturalists’ heaven. Pulicat Sanctuary: Introduction
Pulicat Sanctuary is situated approximately 60 km to the north of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India on the seaward side of the barrier island Sriharikota, which separates Pulicat Lake from the Bay of Bengal. The sanctuary got its name from the Pulicat town, where the sanctuary is located. The Pulicat Sanctuary also has a shallow lagoon stretching for about 60 km along the coast and it spreads over a total area of 500-sq-km. Brackish water lagoon of the sanctuary makes it popular in India and attracts large numbers of migratory water birds.
Wildlife in the Pulicat Sanctuary
The Pulicat Sanctuary is the breeding ground for numerous rare and endangered bird species. This sanctuary also provides habitats to Flamingo and other birds species like Pelicans, Painted Storks, Open Billed Storks, Grey Herons, Cormorants, White Ibis, Spoon Bills, Egrets, Reef Herons, Spot Billed Ducks, Shovellers, Pintails, Sand Pipers, Gills, and River Tern etc. Pulicat Sanctuary is also the home to numerous invertebrates like Prawn, Plankton and Mollusks and fishes of about 65 different species like Sable Fish, Sargin Fish, White, Black and Silver Promphets etc. Moreover, tropical dry evergreen forest with species like Manilkara Hexandra, Albizzia Amara, Strychnos Muxvomica, Ficus Tiela, Dryopteris Sepiata, Pteriospermus, Uberifolium, Glaucum etc and mangrove forest with species like Ezcocaria, Agollocha, Auicenia Officinales, Acanthies Ilicifolius, Rhizophora Apiculata, Xylocarpus Moluecenix, Degiceros Conrniculatum are some of the popular plant species found in the santuary.

Best time to visit : The period between October to March is considered the best time to visit the sanctuary as the weather then is extremely pleasant.
