The Rock Cut Caves in Arvalem are the antique monuments in Goa and provides
considerably in the field of Goa tourism. As per Hindu mythology this caves
were the abode of Pandavas. As per Legends, the Pandavas, sought refuge in
the Rock Cut Arvalem caves during their exile. The origin of the caves has
traced back to the 5th or 6th century A.D.
There exist several opinions regarding the architecture of Rock Cut Caves, Arvalem. Some legend say this the Arvalem caves complex has been carved by the traveling Buddhist monks that holds authority, since these built along the lines of Buddhist caves. The Rock Cut into laterite stone, with the sanctuary at the northern end and the vihara at the southern end was the charming features of Goa.
The Rock cut caves are located just 5 kms from south Bicholim. These caves are quite small having no articulate sculptures or paintings. The origin of these Rock cut caves are also uncertain, the presence of lingas denotes them to be of Brahmin origin. The shafts of the four carved lingas of the Rock Cut Caves resembles with the world class Elephanta and Ellora caves.
