Times of Ancient Archeology

The Dawn of Buddhism

Padmasambhava, widely known as Guru Rimpoche, is known to have brought Buddhism to Bhutan. Gradually several Buddhist monks arrived Bhutan between 8th and 17th century AD. The Advent as a Country
History of Bhutan has it that during the early 17th century, the place was nothing but a battleground of warring tribes. However, Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, a Tibetan lama and military leader, had them all united. He trained himself and also had expertise in military fortification and with due course he had built number of fortresses. It was he who established the cultural symbols and introduced a dual system of government. As the passage of time the power was gradually shared by an administrative leader and a spiritual leader together. Thus slowly it was transforming into a country.

The First Emperor
The fist monarch of Bhutan was Ugyen Wangchuck, the Penlop of Trongsa. He was assigned the title in the year 1907. He was, however, elected by the clergy, the regional governors and the representatives of the people. This was done in order to cease the rivalries and unending strife.

The Struggle With The British
In the early 1700s Bhutanese occupied Indian kingdom of Cooch Behar. This led the Cooch Beharis to appeal to the British for help. Thus the British soldiers had come and they chased Bhutanese out. The British army also attacked Bhutan in 1774 and forced the Bhutanese to sign a treaty. But however, this treaty failed to bring peace between the two.

The Present Modernization
The third king of Bhutan, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, introduced landmark constitutional reforms in the history of Bhutan. Therefore a National Assembly which consisted of one fifty members was established. In due time, Bhutan launched its first Five Year Development Plan in 1961. And till dater Bhutan is open to international community.
